Digital Textile Design - Optional 1 or 2 day Program

Develop textile designs from concept to cloth. Create digital artworks and learn how to create a seamless repeat pattern ready for print.

DAY 1 - (Saturday 29th of April, 10am – 4pm) - The Basics in Photoshop
On the first Saturday we'll be covering the basic of digital image editing; this is aimed at people who have never used Photoshop before or have limited experience and want to refresh the basics. Learn how to:
  • Scan an original artwork/edit an original photograph and understand image size/resolution

  • Clean up image imperfections, resize, reposition, recolour, create a 'print-ready' file.

  • Use basic Photoshop image effects such as Filters and Adjustments.

  • Prerequisites: You must be able to bring your own laptop with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Trial versions available on the Adobe website.

    DAY 2 - (Saturday 6th of May, 10am – 4pm) - Digital Textile Repeats


    On the second Saturday we'll be covering how to create a seamless repeat for digital textile printing and look at more advanced image manipulation tools. This is for people who have the basics of Photoshop down pat. Learn how to:

  • Create seamless full drop and half drop repeats in both Photoshop and Illustrator

  • Use intermediate level Photoshop editing tools such as masks, adjustment layers and blending modes.

  • Use basic Photoshop image effects such as Filters and Adjustments.

  • Prerequisites: Beginner knowledge of Adobe Photoshop. You must be able to bring your own laptop with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Trial versions available on the Adobe website.

    Included as part of course fee: one sample print on the day, the option of printing 1/2 a metre on any fabric (in the weeks following the course), comprehensive booklet of notes.
    The Frankie and Swiss studio is brimming with colour and pattern and will provide a visual reference and context for developing your very own customised fabric designs. At the end of the workshop, you’ll have gained both practical and theoretical experience in developing a textile print from initial concept through to final digital design. You’ll have the chance to see first hand the digital print process.

    This course is facilitated by Rachel, our in-house textile designer at Frankie and Swiss. Rachel studied Textile Design at RMIT and has been part of the Frankie and Swiss family since the business was established in 2011.
